People underestimate how much fat they actually carry over the glutes.
Even at 15%, ventroglute with a 27g 5/8 has been completely fine for me.
If you’re over 20% body fat I’d personally lean toward a longer pin.
I started TRT last winter. Nurse recommended 1″. Later I experimented with 5/8″ after dropping about 35 pounds. Worked much better once I leaned out.
Body fat isn’t the only factor. Fat distribution varies a lot from person to person.
My endocrinologist basically said if you’re unsure, use the longer needle.
I’ve got visible abs and still prefer 1″. Doesn’t hurt enough to justify going shorter.
I accidentally bought a box of 5/8″ needles instead of 1″. Used them for delts instead and reordered. Problem solved.
I’ve been lifting since the late 90s. We didn’t overthink this nearly as much back then. Pick the appropriate needle, rotate sites, keep things sterile, move on.
Honestly I’d rather have a needle that’s slightly longer than wonder whether the oil actually reached muscle.
Recovery was identical for me whether I used 5/8″ or 1″, but I definitely carry less fat around my hips than most guys.
