Some say lifting belts protect your core, others say they make it weaker. What’s your take?
Belt or No Belt Can It Prevent Hernias
-
Belt helps with intra abdominal pressure, but it’s not hernia armor. Bad form still equals risk.
-
It can reduce strain if you brace properly, but it’s not a magic shield. Core strength matters way more.
-
I’ve seen guys blow hernias with belts on. If you’re sloppy with breathing or ego lifting, belt won’t save you.
-
Belt’s a tool, not protection gear. Use it for heavy compounds, but train your core raw too.
-
It helps support your trunk under load, which might lower hernia risk slightly, but it’s not prevention guaranteed.
-
I use mine for 85%+ lifts. Anything lighter, I go without to keep abs and obliques strong.
-
A belt helps you brace harder, which can protect the spine not necessarily the abdominal wall where hernias happen.
-
Think of it this way: belt = better bracing, strong core = real prevention. Do both, and you’re golden.
